Objective To systematically review the current status of tooth loss among elderly individuals in China. Methods Databases including CNKI, VIP, CBM, WanFang Data, PubMed, EMbase, and The Cochrane Library were searched to identify studies on the current status of tooth loss in the Chinese elderly from inception to December 31st, 2020. Two reviewers independently screened literature, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias of the included studies. Meta-analysis was then performed using Stata 16.0 software. Results A total of 26 studies with a sample size of 17 523 participants were included. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the prevalence rate of tooth loss among the Chinese elderly was 84.7% (95%CI 81.8% to 87.6%). Subgroup analysis showed that the tooth loss prevalence rates were higher in females, individuals aged over 75, and those living in rural areas or southwest China. Conclusions The current evidence shows that the prevalence rate of tooth loss among the Chinese elderly is high. Due to the quantity and quality of the included studies, the above conclusions are needed to be verified by more high-quality studies.
