  • Current Development of Medical Science in Lanzhou University

Objective To investigate the current status of clinical and research developments in Lanzhou University in China, to provide reference data for establishing a coordinated, multi-sectional, research orientated and internationally competitive program in biomedical sciences. Methods Three types of questionnaire containing 57 items were designed for 8 secondary departments in clinical and basic sciences. Another type of questionnaire was distributed to 200 clinicians, researchers, lecturers, and administrators in both clinical and basic sciences from August to September 2005. We searched SCI, CSCD, CSTPCD, CBM and CNKI for research articles published by Lanzhou University, commercial development of research derived from the University, and general and competitiveness evaluations of the University. In addition, seminars, site visits, and expert interviews were also conducted. Results The response rates for the questionnaires were 100% and 91% respectively. The investigation included the identification and evaluation of research and clinical departments, human resources in the three branches of biomedical sciences (clinical, research and education), including academic title, educational background, age distribution, research area and funding (leading investigators included), and publication records. The numbers of undergraduate and graduate students and their CET-4 score (pass rate) were also analyzed. Based on the information obtained, six secondary databases were established and evaluated..Conclusions The merger of Lanzhou University and Lanzhou Medical College has created an opportunity for further development in biomedical research and clinical science. Facing new challenges and difficulties, we should take this responsibility to work together to make the University a national and international center of clinical, research and education in medical sciences.

  • Changes of disease spectrum and main therapeutic interventions in respiratory intensive care unit

ObjectiveTo analyze the trend of disease spectrum and main diagnosis and therapeutic technologies in respiratory intensive care unit (RICU) in recent years, and find out the trend of change of patient’s characteristics and commonly used interventions in order to provide evidence for planning discipline development and improving personnel training program.MethodsPatients information and main diagnosis and therapeutic technologies of 1503 inpatients in RICU of Shenzhen People's Hospital from January, 2017 to December, 2020 were collected. The changes of disease spectrum and diagnosis and treatment technologies in different years were compared and analyzed.ResultsAmong all the patients, 66.3% were directly admitted into RICU, 12.1% were transferred from respiratory department, and 21.6% were transferred from other departments. The proportion of patients with non-respiratory diseases as principal diagnosis had an increasing trend, from 18.8% in 2017 to 37.3% in 2020 (P<0.05). The diseases with most obvious increasing trend were sepsis, nervous system diseases, circulatory system diseases and extra-pulmonary malignancies (P<0.05). The use of respiratory related diagnosis and therapeutic technologies was gradually increasing, meanwhile, the use of non-traditional respiratory related technologies, especially continuous renal replacement therapy, was also increasing. There was no significant difference in fatality rate among different years (P>0.05).ConclusionsThe number of patients with extra-pulmonary diseases and the use of non-traditional respiratory related diagnosis and therapeutic technologies in RICU were increasing. Methods We conducted a questionnaire study to investigate chest wall surgery at all levels of hospitals in Sichuan Province and to collect suggestions for chest wall surgery development from thoracic surgeons attending the meeting of the Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association from September 2021 to January 2022. Results A total of 128 questionnaires were issued, with 97 (75.8%) of them being valid. According to the survey results, hospitals with grade A secondary or higher in Sichuan Province performed chest wall surgery. Chest wall surgery accounted for 14.3% of thoracic surgery, with 70.4% being chest wall trauma surgeries, 11.6% being chest wall tumor surgeries, 10.5% being chest wall infection surgeries, and 7.5% being chest wall deformity surgeries. Chest wall surgery accounted for 9.3% of thoracic surgery in the grade A tertiary hospitals, primarily for chest wall trauma and tumor; 23.1% in grade B tertiary hospitals, primarily for chest wall trauma and tumor; and 50.7% in grade A secondary hospitals, primarily for chest wall trauma and infection. Totally 96.9% of hospitals supported the establishment of a subspecialty in chest wall surgery. Suggestions for advancing chest wall surgery included: enhancing communication and cooperation (e.g. holding academic conferences, training courses), the establishment of the chest wall surgery association or consortium, and the formulation of regulations and guidelines or consensus, etc. Conclusion Chest wall surgery has been performed at all levels of hospitals in Sichuan Province.
