  • Employment Intentions to Primary Health Service Organizations among Medical Students in North Sichuan Medical College: A Questionnaire Survey

    Objective To get known about the employment intentions to primary health service organizations (PHSO) among medical students in North Sichuan Medical College, and to assess its main influencing factors, so as to provide scientific evidence for occupational guidance in medical colleges, as well as talent introduction and retention in PHSO. Methods By cluster sampling method, medical undergraduates and college students in North Sichuan Medical College were investigated using a self-designed questionnaire from April to October, 2010. EpiData 3.1 and SPSS 16.0 software were used for inputting data and analyzing respectively. Results a) Among 900 questionnaires distributed, 870 were reclaimed (response rate 96.7%). b) Nearly 60% of medical students thought their own professional development was “average”, with following intentions after graduation in order: employment first and then postgraduate entrance exam, employment, postgraduate entrance exam; and 85% of medical students were more willing to work in medical institutions above level-2 in city or county. c) More than 70% of medical students’ employment intentions to PHSO were “average”, and “unwilling”, etc.; the main influencing factors were personal development space, salary and welfare, and comprehensive strength of hospital, etc. d) More than 90% of medical students “Do not know” or “generally” understood the related national preferential policies. Conclusion Government, PHSO and universities should take measures together and increase policy advocacy and infrastructure investment, so as to encourage medical students to work in PHSO.

  • Employment Situation and Intentions among Medical Students of Grade 2005 in Lanzhou University: A Questionnaire Survey

    Objective By investigating the employment situation and intentions of medical students, to provide scientific evidence for guiding students’ employment by relevant departments, and to give references for formulating reasonable medical personnel training and distribution policy by health administrations. Methods The medical students of Grade 2005 in Lanzhou University were investigated by using a self-designed questionnaire. Results Among 397 questionnaires distributed, 337 were returned (84.8%). The analyses showed, when hunting a job, 45% of the respondents thought the “opportunities for personal development” was the most important factor, 61% thought the influence of parents’ or family’s desires was “greater” or “extremely greater”, 85% thought the job matching their majors was “important” or “very important”, 57% thought it is “easier” to get a content job by their majors, 51% held that the “fewer opportunities” were the most unfavorable conditions for working in township hospitals, 68% wouldn’t directly choose township hospitals after graduation, and 67% still gave up the choice even if an official position was provided. Conclusion The medical students attach great importance to the opportunities for their personal development, but they lack self-consciousness in choosing the occupation. They are optimistic about the employment but lack passion for primary hospitals. Meanwhile, they aren’t familiar with national policy guidance; their employment fields are narrow.

  • Investigation on the Current Status of Learning Goals and Expectation of Employment of 164 New Clinical Medical Postgraduate Students

    Objective?To investigate the current status of new clinical medical postgraduate students on their learning goals and expectation of employment, and to provide the evidence and suggestions for improving the management of medical postgraduates’ training. Methods?We designed the questionnaire to investigate the current status of learning goals and expectation of employment of new clinical medical postgraduate students of Lanzhou University. We issued 164 questionnaires and took back 164 ones, among which 157 were effective, with the effective rate of 95.7%. Results?(1) The proportion of the postgraduates with working experience was less than 50%, and most of these worked in the municipal and county hospitals. (2) The 78.3% of them considered that clinical and research abilities were of the same importance. (3) The 65.6% of them expected to get Medical Science Degree; (4) The 96.8% of them wanted, after graduation, to engage in clinical work or the work in which clinical affairs and research were equally important, and only 3.2% hoped to engage in research-oriented work; (5) Although clinical skills and research capabilities of the first-year medical postgraduates were very poor at their entrance to the graduate school, their expectations of employment were very high. Conclusion?(1) The improvement and innovation of medical postgraduates’ clinical and research training are urgently needed. (2) The publicity and supporting policies should be enhanced for Clinical Medicine Degrees, and the postgraduates should be guided to comply their own expectations with social needs properly.

  • The employment situation and the status analysis of optometry students from medical colleges

    Objective To investigate the employment situation of optometry students from medical colleges 5-10 years after graduation to provide suggestions on construction and development of optometry. Methods Between July and November 2015, a electronic questionnaire survey was conducted among 100 optometry students graduated from West China Hospital of Sichuan University(from 55 students) and China Medical University (from 84 students) 5-10 years ago. The questionnaire items included: the employer at the graduation, the current employer, whether changing job, whether diverting to other professions, job satisfaction extent, situation of continuing education, and advice on optometry education and optometry professional development. Results Sixty-three graduates gave back valid questionnaire. After graduation, 61 graduates (96.8%) engaged in in the optometry profession, and 2 (3.2%) diverted to other professions. Five to ten years after graduation, 57 graduates (90.5%) engaged in the optometry profession, and 6 (9.5%) diverted to other professions. The job satisfaction of 52 graduates (82.5%) was good. Conclusions Under the circumstances of severe shortage of professional optical talents, optometry students from medical colleges should fully understand their own profession, make good psychological adjustment on employment and good phased career plan, and continue to strengthen the knowledge, to solve the present situation of the lack of the highly educated optical professionals.

  • An investigation of the employment situation for graduates of West China School of Medicine in Sichuan University

    Objectives To investigate the employment situation of graduates of West China School of Medicine in Sichuan University. Methods The employment situation of graduates from West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University from 2013 to 2017 were investigated. Student’s information, employment rate, employment satisfaction, self-evaluation of graduates and employment satisfaction were investigated. A descriptive analysis was used. Results A total of 1 789 graduates, including 602 academic degree graduates and 1 187 professional degree graduates, were surveyed. The one-time employment rate of graduates was over 90%, and the employment rate at the end of first year was 100%. The rate of academic degree graduates engaging in medical-related work was on the decline. The top 3 items of graduates' professional competence self-evaluation were professional knowledge and practical skills, teamwork awareness, and pioneering spirit. Graduates' job satisfaction was increased annually. Conclusions The employment satisfaction of graduates of West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University is increasing year by year, while the guidance and service for graduate students should be further strengthened.

  • Multi-center survey of employment status of maintenance hemodialysis patients and analysis of influencing factors

    Objective To investigate and analyze the employment status and related influencing factors of maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Methods MHD patients from four hemodialysis centers in Beijing between January 2020 and January 2021 were selected. The baseline data and clinical data of patients with long dialysis interval were collected. An anxiety and depression survey was conducted on the patient. Results A total of 108 MHD patients were included. Among them, 41 patients were working and 67 patients were not working. Among the 41 patients at work, there were 3 workers, 1 farmer, 14 company employees, 6 public institution employees, 11 self-employed, 5 freelancer and 1 other. Among the 67 patients who did not work, 8 patients had the ability to work but did not work. Body mass index was an independent influencing factor for employment in MHD patients [odds ratio=1.135, 95% confidence interval (1.017, 1.266), P=0.024]. Conclusion The nutritional status of MHD patients should be taken seriously to improve their employment rate.
