Objective We aimed to describe the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, its epidemiological characteristics, and to analyse the relationship of waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI) with metabolic syndrome (MS) among staff at Southeast University. Methods The data from the overall physical examination of 1979 staff were analyzed. Results The crude prevalence of MS were 21.7%,26.4% and 14.2% in the whole population, men and women respectively. The standardized rates were 14.7%,19.0% and 9.4%. The prevalence of MS in men was significantly higher than that in women(Plt;0.05). Both abdominal obesity and visceral obesity were positively correlated with the prevalence of MS(r=0.295, 0.248, P=0.000). Conclusion The prevalence of MS among staff of Southeast University has shown a significant increase in 2006. WHR and BMI are both correlated with the prevalence of MS.
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are considered to have important value in the treatment of various diseases because of their low immunogenicity, transferability, and strong tissue repair capacity. Stromal cell derived factor-1 (SDF-1) and its receptor CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) pathway plays an important role in migration of MSC. The induction of homing of MSC to retina by regulating SDF-1/CXCR4 may exert the curative effect on diabetic retinopathy to greatest exent.
Objective To investigate change of bispectral index(BIS) and hemodynamic index during induction and orotracheal intubation of sevoflurane anesthesia. Methods This study was a prospective before-after study in the same patients. A total of 30 ASA physical status I and II adult patients without airway abnormalities were enrolled to receive inhalation induction of anesthesia with 8% sevoflurane. Mean arterial pressure(MAP),heart rate(HR) and BIS were recorded before anesthesia(T1),when patients loss of consciousness(T2), before intubation (T3),at 1 min(T4) and 3 min(T5) after intubation. Results BIS at T1-T5 were 96.8±1.7,70.4±8.8,39.2±8.4,43.6±12.9 and 41.6±9.3 respectively, the measurements at T2-T5 were all markedly lower than at T1(Plt;0.05). HR at T3-T5 were all markedly higher than at T1(Plt;0.05). MAP at T2 and T3 were markedly lower than at T1, but at T4 was higher than at T1(Plt;0.05), and recovered to the level at T1 at T5(Pgt;0.05).BIS,HR and MAP at T4 were all significantly higher than T3(Plt;0.05). Conclusion Anesthesia induction with sevoflurane and small dose of succinylchoiline we used can provide adequate depth of general anesthesia, but can not prevent cardiovascular adverse reactions to intubation.
Objective To compare BODE index with GOLD staging for the severity evaluation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD) . To investigate the relationship between BODE index and quality of life. Methods A total of 100 patients with stable COPD were enrolled. All participants were examined with lung function test and St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire ( SGRQ) for evaluation of quality of life. BODE index and it’s four components including body mass index( BMI) , airflow obstruction ( FEV1%pred) , dyspnea( MMRC) , and exercise capacity( 6MWD) were calculated. The participants were divided into four groups of severity using GOLD guidelines and BODE index quartiles. Results The associations between SGRQ total score and SGRQ subscales, and BODE index were significant( P lt;0. 01) .BODE index was a significant predictor of the quality of life, explaining 41. 3% of the total score of the SGRQ ( P lt;0. 01) . However, GOLD classification showed a correlation only with SGRQ activity score ( P lt;0. 05) but not with other SGRQ scores. There were significant differences in SGRQ total score and SGRQsubscales between different severity groups of BODE index( P lt;0. 01) . But there was no difference in SGRQ score between different severity groups of GOLD classification, except SGRQ activity score. Conclusion BODE scoring system is better correlated with the quality of life as assessed by the disease severity inpatients with COPD than the GOLD staging criteria.
