  • Progress in diagnosis and treatment of brain metastasis from colorectal cancer

ObjectiveTo elucidate the clinical and pathological features and review the progress of diagnosis and treatment in patients with brain metastasis (BM) from colorectal cancer (CRC), so as to provide a reference for the whole process management for patients with BM from CRC in China.MethodThe latest research results and previous literatures about patients with BM from CRC were reviewed.ResultsThe prognosis of BM from CRC was poor, its molecular pathological mechanism was complex and diverse, and some risk factors associated with the occurrence of BM had been identified. Typical imaging features of BM from CRC were helpful to the diagnosis of patients. At present, radiotherapy was still the main treatment. Bevacizumab treatment or immunotherapy combined with radiotherapy was expected to improve the survival of BM from CRC.ConclusionScientific and standardized prevention, diagnosis, and treatment are beneficial to reduce incidence of BM from CRC and improve survival.

  • Correlation between CYP1A1 MspI gene polymorphisms and the risk of breast cancer in Chinese population: a meta-analysis

ObjectiveTo study the correlation between CYP1A1 MspI gene polymorphisms and the risk of breast cancer (BC) in Chinese population.MethodsThe case-control studies on the correlation between polymorphisms of CYP1A1 MspI and BC in Chinese population were electronically retrieved in online English database (PubMed and Web of Science) and Chinese database (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and VIP database) from the date of their establishment to December 31, 2018. Two reviewers completed literature screening according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, data extraction, and methodological quality assessment of the included studies independently. Reman 5.3 software was used to meta-analysis.ResultsA total 14 case-control studies involving 3 372 cases and 3 510 controls were finally included. The meta-analysis results showed that the CYP1A1 MspI gene polymorphism was associated with BC in Chinese population. Dominant genetic model [OR=1.24, 95%CI was (0.98, 1.58), P=0.08] and heterozygote model [OR=1.11, 95%CI was (0.89, 1.39), P=0.37] had no association with BC in Chinese population, while recessive genetic model [OR=1.66, 95%CI was (1.28, 2.14), P=0.000 1], homozygote model [OR=1.76, 95%CI was (1.26, 2.45), P=0.000 9], and allele contrast genetic model [OR=1.30, 95%CI was (1.08, 1.56), P=0.005] increased the risk of BC in Chinese population.ConclusionIt is demonstrated that in Chinese population, CYP1A1 MspI gene polymorphisms related to the risk of BC, recessive genetic model, homozygote model, and allele contrast genetic model might be the risk factor for BC.

  • Clinical Outcomes of Simultaneous Video-assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery for Bilateral Giant Bullae

ObjectiveTo explore clinical outcomes of simutaneous video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for bilateral giant bullae (GB). MethodsClinical data of 160 GB patients who received surgical treatment in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from March 2011 to April 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. According to GB location and surgical strategies, all the patients were divided into 3 groups. In group A, there were 108 patients with spontaneous pneumothorax (SP) and unilateral GB who underwent unilateral GB resection with VATS, including 88 male and 20 female patients with their age of 31.36±16.14 years. In group B, there were 40 patients with SP and bilateral GB who underwent unilateral GB resection in the SP side with VATS, including 36 male and 4 female patients with their age of 37.63±18.84 years. In group C, there were 12 patients with SP and bilateral GB who underwent simultaneous bilateral GB resection with VATS, including 9 male and 3 female patients with their age of 32.58±16.06 years. Postoperative morbidity and SP recurrence rates were analyzed. ResultsAll the operations were successfully performed, and patients were followed up for 20 months after discharge. In group A, postoperative complications included acute pulmonary edema in 1 patient, pleural adhesion in 11 patients, respiratory failure in 2 patients, and pulmonary air leak in 5 patients. During follow-up, SP recurred in 5 patients including 2 patients with SP recurrence at the same side and 3 patients with SP recurrence at the other side of thorax. In group B, postoperative complications included pleural adhesion in 4 patients, respiratory failure in 1 patient, and pulmonary air leak in 3 patients. During follow-up, SP recurred in 18 patients including 3 patients with SP recurrence at the same side and 15 patients with SP recurrence at the other side of thorax. In group C, postoperative complications included pleural adhesion in 2 patients and pulmonary air leak in 1 patient. During follow-up, SP recurred in 1 patient at the same side of thorax. SP recurrence rates of group A and C were significantly lower than that of group B (P=0.000 and P=0.031 respectively). ConclusionSimultaneous VATS is safe, efficacious and reliable for the treatment of bilateral GB, and can effectively prevent SP recurrence at the other side of thorax.

  • Experimental Comparison Research between Two Kinds of Modified Poly (lactic acid) Material In Vitro

This study aims to compare two kinds of modified poly (lactic acid) (PLA) materials:PLA-chitosan (PLA-CTS) and PLA-poly (glycolic acid) (PLA-PGA). PLA-CTS and PLA-PGA scaffolds were prepared and observed under electron microscope. The scaffold porosity was calculated and the pH of the degradation solution was measured. Then rat olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) were cultivated, and mixed cultured respectively with two scaffolds as two groups. The proliferation, adhesion rate and growth condition of the OECs were observed and compared between the two groups. Results showed that both the prepared PLA-CTS and PLA-PGA scaffolds were three-dimensional porous structure and the porosity of PLA-CTS was 91%, while that of PLA-PGA was 87%. The pH of degradation solution decreased gradually, of which PLA-PGA fell faster than PLA-CTS. After added to the two scaffolds, most OECs could grow well, and there were no significant differences between the two groups on MTT test and nuclei number determined by fluorescent microscope. However, the cell adhesion rate of PLA-CTS group was significantly higher than that of PLA-PGA. It can be concluded that compared with PLA-PGA, PLA-CTS might be a better choice as OECs scaffold.
