  • THE EFFECT OF ULTRAPURE HYALURONIC ACID WITH DIFFERENT MOLECULAR WEIGHTS ON THE HEALING OF PORCINE FULL THICKNESS SKIN WOUND

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is an extracellular matrix having a high molecular weight. This study is to investigate (1) whether the ultrapure HA had effect on the healing of full thickness skin wounds in animals, and (2) the relation between the effect of HA and the size of the molecular weight of HA. The ultrapure HA with different molecular weights and HA with intermediate molecular weight were applied topically to the wounds from removal of full thickness of skin and topical application of normal saline was used as control. At 21st, day after the topical application, the tensile strength was reduced in wounds of groups of HA with high and intermediate molecular weights, but not in the group of low molecular weight. Using laser-Doppler scanning of the dynamic changes of the wound perfusion, in the 3rd day the blood supply to the wound was reduced in HA groups of high and intermediate molecular weights, but at the 7th day, the blood supply of all wounds in the two groups was increased. The study revealed that HA with different molecular weights had different actions on the contraction of wounds, the angiogenesis of the granulation tissues and the healing strength of the wounds. It was indicated that hyaluronan could be used for wound treatment or as a carrier, but its accurate composition must be carefully noted.

  • APPLICATION OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL CEPHALOMETRIC ANALYSIS IN ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY

ObjectiveTo establish a model of three-dimensional (3-D) cephalometric analysis to study dentomaxillofacial deformities. MethodsBetween January 2012 and October 2013,15 patients with dentomaxillofacial deformities were treated using 3-D cephalometric analysis in orthognathic surgery plan. There were 7 males and 8 females with an average age of 23.6 years (range,17-37 years),including 4 cases of mandibular protrusion with maxillary deficiency,4 cases of maxillary protrusion with mandibular deficiency,2 cases of long face syndrome, and 5 cases of facial asymmetry.CT images were reconstructed by Mimics software. The anatomical landmarks were located, the reference planes and analysis planes were defined and the 3-D coordinate was established. The distance and degree between landmarks and analysis planes which defined in the measure project were measured. ResultsBased on the 3-D CT quantitative analysis methods, cephalometric analysis project was defined in the 3-D coordinate.3-D cephalometric analysis provided a convenient and precise method for the clinical measurement of dentomaxillofacial morphology, and reduce the time in preoperation analysis. ConclusionThe model of 3-D CT cephalometric analysis can provide precise information in the diagnosis and treatment planning of orthognathic surgery.

  • MODIFIED SURGICAL REPAIR OF SEVERE INGROWN TOENAIL

Objective To summarize the effectiveness of modified surgical repair for severe ingrown toenail. Methods Between January 2005 and December 2010, 13 patients with severe ingrown toenail (16 toes) were treated. There were 12 males (15 toes) and 1 female (1 toe), aged 18-32 years with an average of 20 years. The disease duration was 1-15 years (mean, 2 years and 9 months). All affected toes were great toes. Ingrown toenail occurred bilaterally in 3 cases and unilaterally in 10 cases. Granulation tissue surrounding nail-edge, embedded toenail, and necrotic nail bed were completely removed; tension glue was used to make wound edge close to nail bed. Results At 3-5 days after operation, wound congestion, swelling, and exudation were improved; at 7 days, new nail bed formed; at 2 weeks, all wounds healed, and nail bed was epitheliogenic, wound edge healed well close to nail plate, and patients returned to normal life. At 6 months after nail extraction, new toenail grew and nail groove formed. No recurrent sign was found during 24-month follow-up. Conclusion Modified surgical repair is one of effective methods to treat severe ingrown toenail with the advantages of good appearance and low recurrent rate.
