  • Present Situation and Progress in Research on HIV/AIDS Laboratory Testing

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a severe infectious disease induced by human immuno deficiency virus (HIV). Laboratory testing plays an important role in the diagnosis of HIV/AIDS. In general, laboratory testing includes detection of virus antibodies and antigens, virus RNA, immune cells (CD4+, CD8+) and anti-HIV drug resistance. During the past twenty years, great progress has been made in laboratory testing. As research on HIV/AIDS has advanced and biotechnology has developed rapidly, different methods of testing have been discovered. In recent years, the application of molecular biotechnology and immunology has led to important advances for epidemiological surveys, clinical diagnosis and treatment of HIV. The existence of a testing method with high sensitivity and specificity is not only helpful for early diagnosis and prediction, monitoring and evaluation of therapeutic efficacy, but can also reduce the risk of false-negative results. HIV laboratory testing is now developing towards a simple, rapid, sensitive, accurate and automatic way of diagnosing this condition.

  • The Study of Combined Lamivudine and Adefovir Therapy in HBeAg-positive Chronic Hepatitis B Patients with Poor Response to Adefovir Monotherapy

【Abstract】 Objective To observe the effect and safety of adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) combined with lamnivudine (LAM) in treating HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with poor response to ADV monotherapy for 48 weeks. Methods Twenty-six HBeAg-positive CHB patients received initial treatment of ADV from January 2006 to December 2010, and their serum HBV-DNA still maintained over or equal to 1.0×104 copies/mL after 48 weeks. These patients received the optimized treatment of ADV (10 mg, one time per day) combined with LAM (100 mg, one time per day). Patients′ responses to the treatment at the 12th and 24th week were observed. Results Compared with baseline, ADV plus LAM had an improved response rate of virological response, biochemical response and HBeAg/HBeAb seroconversion. No LAM-resistant or ADV-resistant mutations were detected. In all the 26 patients, no adverse reactions were observed. Conclusion Optimized therapy combining LAM and ADV can be a good choice for patients with hepatitis B who have a poor response to ADV monotherapy.

  • The implementation and effectiveness of acquired immune deficiency syndrome prevention and control work assisted by West China Hospital of Sichuan University in Zhaojue

Zhaojue is a deeply impoverished county located in Liangshan Autonomous Prefecture with high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus infection. Based on local conditions, West China Hospital of Sichuan University has established a targeted supporting mode called “three-level organization and five-in-one”. This mode integrates administrative support teams, multiple disciplinary technical support teams and on-site expert teams to achieve five goals, including building effective teams, promoting clinical practice, enhancing skill training, focusing on academics and building a systematic platform. This model has improved the ability of treatment on human immunodeficiency virus infection and overall health services in Zhaojue County. It also reflects the responsibility of West China Hospital of Sichuan University in poverty alleviation and public welfare.

  • Research progress of magnesium and magnesium alloy implants in sports medicine

Objective To review the research progress of magnesium and magnesium alloy implants in the repair and reconstruction of sports injury. Methods Relevant literature of magnesium and magnesium alloys for sports injury repair and reconstruction was extensively reviewed. The characteristics of magnesium and its alloys and their applications in the repair and reconstruction of sports injuries across various anatomical sites were thoroughly discussed and summarized. Results Magnesium and magnesium alloys have advantages in mechanical properties, biosafety, and promoting tendon-bone interface healing. Many preclinical studies on magnesium and magnesium alloy implants for repairing and reconstructing sports injuries have yielded promising results. However, successful clinical translation still requires addressing issues related to mechanical strength and degradation behavior, where alloying and surface treatments offer feasible solutions. Conclusion The clinical translation of magnesium and magnesium alloy implants for repairing and reconstructing sports injuries holds promise. Subsequent efforts should focus on optimizing the mechanical strength and degradation behavior of magnesium and magnesium alloy implants. Conducting larger-scale biocompatibility testing and developing novel magnesium-containing implants represent new directions for future research.

  • Thinking about hot issues in the diagnosis and treatment of novel coronavirus pneumonia

At the end of December 2019, some hospitals in Wuhan, Hubei, China found unexplained pneumonia cases one after another. On January 12, 2020, World Health Organization officially named the new coronavirus that caused the outbreak as “2019 new coronavirus”. The National Health Committee of China has organized experts to compile a “pneumonia diagnosis and treatment program for new coronavirus infection” to guide the prevention, control, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. However, due to the limited knowledge of the disease, there are still many problems to be solved in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. We reviewed the researches on coronavirus infections related to severe acute respiratory syndrome and Middle East respiratory syndrome, combined with our own experience in diagnosis and treatment, and proposed some thoughts on several unclear hot issues such as the mode of disease transmission, the incubation period, the practical application of diagnostic standards, and the choice of treatment drugs in the diagnosis and treatment plan.

  • Diagnosis and treatment process of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 in isolation ward of West China Hospital of Sichuan University

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is highly contagious, and the route of transmission is dominated by respiratory droplets and contact transmission. At present, the disease prevention and control are difficult. In order to prevent and control COVID-19 and prevent its spread in the hospital, West China Hospital of Sichuan University has set up isolation wards in the center of infectious diseases. The work norms for isolation ward were formulated. This may help to strengthen the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, effectively control the epidemic situation, as well as protect the health and safety of the public and medical staff. This article introduces the specific settings, diagnosis and treatment specifications, and hospital infection prevention and control strategies of the isolation ward of West China Hospital of Sichuan University, shares the work experience of isolation wards, aims to provide a reference for other hospitals to effectively prevent the spread of COVID-19 in hospitals and curb the spread of COVID-19.
