  • The Role of Apoptosis of Acinar Cells in Acute Rejection after Pancreas Transplantation in Rats

ObjectiveTo explore apoptosis of acinar cells during pancreatic allograft rejection in rats.MethodsGroups of Wistar rats underwent heterotopic pancreaticoduodenal transplantation from syngenic Wistar of allogenic SD rats. The grafts were harvested on postoperative day 3, 5 and 7. All graft samples were subjected to histological examination and apoptotic cells of graft acinar cells using in situ terminal deoxynucleotidy1 transferasemediated dUTP nickend labeling (TUNEL). Histopathological rejection score and apoptotic index (AI) were analyzed. ResultsThe incidence of apoptotic cells was increased steadily over time in allografts, in contrast with syngenic grafts. The apoptotic cells in allografts were mainly acinar cells and few infiltrating lymphocytes. A significant correlation between apoptotic index and histopathological rejection score was noted.ConclusionTUNEL can display apoptosis of single cell in situ. Apoptosis is an important mechanism of tissue injury in acute pancreatic allograft rejection in rats. Acinar cell apoptosis can be used as a valuble index to estimate the injury of grafts and to monitor the acute rejection.

  • Effects of Vaporized Perfluorocarbon Inhalation on Histopathology of Lung and Extra-Pulmonary Organs in Rabbits with Acute Lung Injury

Objective To investigate the effects of vaporized perfluorocarbon( PFC) inhalation on histopathology of lung, small intestine, liver and kidney of acute lung-injured rabbits. Methods Eighteen New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups, ie. a conventional mechanical ventilation( CMV)group, a PFC group, and a control group. The rabbits were mechanical ventilated and intratracheally infused artificial seawater to induce acute lung injury. After ALI was established( PaO2 /FiO2 lt; 200 mm Hg) , the CMV group received CMV for 6 hours. The PFC group received PFC inhalation for 2 hours, and followed by CMV for 4 hours. And the control group was weaned from ventilation. Then they were sacrificed for histopathological measurement of lung, small intestine, liver and kidney. Results The rabbits in the control group died in 15 minutes after discontinuation of ventilation. Vaporized PFC inhalation can obviously improve oxygenation and attenuate the damage of the lung in contrast to CMV. Mild improvement was observed in small intestine, liver and kidney after vaporized PFC inhalation, but without statistical significance. Conclusion Vaporized PFC inhalation can improve oxygenation and attenuate lung injury in histopathology, but have no apparent protective effects on extra-pulmonary organs.

  • OXYGEN FREE RADICAL AND HUMAN FIBROUS CAPSULE

The specimens were obtained from 7 fibrous capsules two years after mammoplasty with silicone prosthesis, and were examined by electron spin resonance (ESR) andmicroscope. The result showed that a marked quantities of oxygen free radical existed in the capsules and that the main pathological change was the infiltration of massive inflammatory cells and deposition of collagen. It was suggested that the fibrous capsule formation was concerned with the oxygen free radical. The origin of the oxygen free radical in mammoplasty with slicone was also discussed.

  • Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma of Liver: A Clinicopathologic Analysis of 9 Cases and Review of Literatures

ObjectiveTo summarize the clinicopathologic features of hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE). MethodThe clinical and histopathologic features, and follow-up data of 9 patients with hepatic EHE were analyzed retrospectively. Results①There were 4 males and 5 females in 9 patients with hepatic EHE. The age was from 25 years to 69 years.②Five patients presented with nonspecific symptoms such as right upper quadrant pain, fatigue or weight loss. Four patients were asymptomatic.③Macroscopically, the tumors were usually multiple and ranged in size from 0.5 cm to 9.0 cm.④Histologically, the tumors appeared as cords or solid nets that were characterized by epithelioid, histiocytoid, spindle or signet-ring-like cells. The cells often contained vacuoles representing intracellular lumina, in which red blood cells could be seen. The neoplastic cells invaded the surrounding liver tissue and formed papillary or glomeruloid structure in vessels. The stroma was fibrous with myxohyaline areas.⑤Immunohistochemical stain showed that all the tumors were positive for endothelial markers (factorⅧ-related antigen, CD34, CD31, and so on). ConclusionsEHE of liver is a very rare clinical entity. It might be easily misdiagnosed due to EHE without specific clinical and imaging changes. Its final diagnosis depends on pathological and immunohistochemical findings.

  • Comprehensive Quantitative Interpretation of Radiologic Features of Lung Adenocarcinoma Showed as Ground-glass Opacity

Lung ground glass opacity (GGO), which is associated with the pathology of the lung adenocarcinoma, is drawing more and more attention with the increased detection rate. However, it is still in the research stage for the imaging interpretation of GGO lesions. In this paper, we reviewed and analyzed the new classification of lung adenocarcinoma corresponding to the interpretation of GGO imaging feature, which emphasizes on how to determine the GGO lesions comprehensively and quantitative determination of the invasive extent of GGO.

  • Diagnostic Value of CT-Guided Percutaneous Lung Biopsy in Pulmonary Diseases

ObjectiveTo evaluate the diagnostic value of computer tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous lung biopsy and tissue culture in pulmonary diseases. MethodsAfter the preoperative evaluation, 48 patients underwent CT-guided percutaneous lung biopsy were analyzed, and 16 patients accepted tissue culture. The clinical significance of combined diagnostic rate of histopathology and tissue culture was investigated. ResultsAll patients were punctured successfully. The pathological diagnosis confirmed 26 (54.2%) cases with malignant lesions and 16 (33.3%) cases with benign lesions. Six cases could not be pathological diagnosed. The pathological diagnostic rate was 87.5%. Sixteen patients accepted tissue culture. Among them 3 cases with benign lesions were cultured. The positive rate of tissue culture was 18.8%, and improved to 30.0% in the patients with benign lesion. The combined diagnostic rate of histopathology and tissue culture was 89.6%. In addition, the accuracy rate of pathological diagnosis in the group of lung nodules was 95.0%, higher than the others. The accuracy rate of pathological diagnosis in lung nodules of 2cm~3cm in diameter was 100.0%, and the positive rate of tissue culture in lung lump of 3cm~5cm in diameter was 25.0%. The incidence of pneumothorax and hemorrhage was 14.6%. ConclusionsCT-guided percutaneous lung biopsy is a safe and effective diagnostic method. For pulmonary infectious diseases, combination of CT-guided percutaneous lung biopsy and tissue culture can improve the early diagnostic rate.

  • Present view in understanding of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy

Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is originally defined as a separate disease, but with the development of imaging techniques, it has now been included in the spectrum of neovascularization. In the Asian population, the prevalence of PCV is high, and with the deepening of clinical studies, the pathological characteristics, pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of PCV have been more deeply understood. Through dynamic observation and histopathological study of PCV lesions during operation, it can be confirmed that the lesions are mainly located between the retinal pigment epithelium and the Bruch membrane, rather than originating from the choroidal circulation, which is of great significance for understanding the origin and natural course of PCV. It is worth noting that although a theoretical bridge has been established between age-related macular degeneration (AMD)/PCV, there is a lack of intuitive clinical data on the ultrastructural and molecular manifestations of the cells/stroma in the local lesions of the eye, especially the progression of AMD/PCV from early/middle stage to exudative stage. It is precisely because of this that highly attractive research topics and exploration space are proposed for the future.
