  • The effect of indoor environment on acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Objective To evaluate the effects of indoor temperature and relative humidity on acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(AECOPD).Methods A total of 70 moderate to very severe COPD patients were recruited. The data including indoor temperature and relative humidity twice daily, increase over their stable symptoms in "major" symptoms(dyspnea, sputum purulence, sputum amount) and "minor" symptoms(nasal discharge/congestion,sore throat, cough),and adjustment of medication were recorded on diary cards. All data were collected from Jan 2005 to Dec 2005 by telephone inquiring or home visiting.Furthermore, the corresponding median outdoor temperature, relative humidity and air pressure from atmosphere bureau were compared with indoors parameters to examine the different effects on AECOPD.Results Fifty-five cases completed the whole investigation.Indoor temperature and relative humidity were both risk factors when logistic regression was used to evaluate the effect. Our research showed that AECOPD was significantly related to indoor and ourdoor environment factors. The correlation coefficient of all factors were r=-0.686(indoor temperature),r=-0.671(outer temperature),r=0.105(indoor humidity),r=-0.115(outer humidity),r=0.545(atmospheric pressure) respectively. Conclusions The indoor temperature and relative humidity, especially low temperature and high relative humidity, had important effects on AECOPD of moderate to very severe patients. It may be helpful to prevent AECOPD by adjusting the indoor temperature and relative humidity.

  • Relationship between indoor decoration and the incidence of childhood leukemia in China: a meta-analysis

Objectives To systematically review the relationship between indoor decoration and childhood leukemia in China. Methods CNKI, WanFang Data, VIP, CBM, PubMed, EMbase and The Cochrane Library databases were electronically searched to obtain case-control studies of the relationships between indoor decoration and childhood leukemia from inception to December 2016. Two reviewers independently screened literature, extracted data and assessed the risk of bias of included studies. Then, meta-analysis was performed by using RevMan 5.3 software. Results A total of 13 studies involving 1 727 cases and 2 468 controls were included. The results of meta-analysis showed that indoor decoration could increase the risk of childhood leukemia in China (OR=2.69, 95%CI 1.82 to 3.98, P<0.000 01). Conclusions The current evidence suggests that indoor decoration is a risk factor for childhood leukemia in Chinese. Due to limited quality and quantity of the included studies, more high-quality studies are required to verify above conclusions.

  • Three-dimensional positioning and trajectory tracking of pigeons in large indoor spaces

Animal localization and trajectory tracking are of great value for the study of brain spatial cognition and navigation neural mechanisms. However, traditional optical lens video positioning techniques are limited in their scope due to factors such as camera perspective. For pigeons with excellent spatial cognition and navigation abilities, based on the beacon positioning technology, a three-dimensional (3D) trajectory positioning and tracking method suitable for large indoor spaces was proposed, and the corresponding positioning principle and hardware structure were provided. The results of in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the system could achieve centimeter-level positioning and trajectory tracking of pigeons in a space of 360 cm × 200 cm × 245 cm. Compared with traditional optical lens video positioning techniques, this system has the advantages of large space, high precision, and high response speed. It not only helps to study the neural mechanisms of pigeon 3D spatial cognition and navigation, but also has high reference value for trajectory tracking of other animals.
