  • Effects of Toremifene on Estrogen Receptors Expression and Tumor Micro-angiogenesis in Rat Lewis Lung Carcinoma

Objective To explore the effect of toremifene on estrogen receptor (ER) expression and tumor micro-angiogenesis in rat Lewis lung carcinoma. Methods Cell suspension of rat Lewis lung carcinoma was implanted into 40 female Wistar rats subcutaneously. The rats were randomly divided into a control group,a estradiol group (0.006 mg/mL),a low dose toremifene group (0.25 mg/mL) and a high dose toremifene group (5 mg/mL). Tumor size was measured every 3 days and the tumor growth curve was charted. On 15th day,the tumor weight and the growth inhibition rate were measured. Immunohistochemical method was used to detect the expressions of estrogen receptor α (ERα),estrogen receptor β (ERβ),vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF),and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1). Integral optical density (IOD) of ERα,ERβ and VEGF was calculated by image analysis software. Quantitative method of Weidner with PECAM-1 was employed for microvessel density (MVD) count. Results Tumor size of the four groups all presented a quadratic function growth trend with time (Plt;0.05). Tumor growth speed was slower in toremifene groups of low and high doses than that in the control group and the estradiol group. The growth inhibition rate of the estradiol group, the low dose toremifene group and the high dose toremifene group was -15.1%,22.6%,and 45.1%,respectively. The expressions of ERα,VEGF,and MVD in the estradiol group were significantly higher than those in the control group, the low dose toremifene group and the high dose toremifene group (all Plt;0.05). The expressions of ERα,VEGF,and MVD in the low dose toremifene group were significantly lower than those in control group, but higher than those in high dose toremifene group (all Plt;0.05).The expression of ERα was positively related to VEGF (r=0.664,Plt;0.05) and MVD(r=0.593,Plt;0.05). Conclusion Toremifene can inhibit tumor growth, which maybe involved in inhibiting ERα mediated VEGF expression.

  • Risk Factor Analysis for Solitary Pulmonary Nodules between Benign and Malignant

More and more solitary pulmonary nodules (SPN) are discovered with the development of imaging technology. Early and appropriate evaluation of SPN is of great importance for following treatment and patients' prognosis, as early differentiation between benign and malignant is difficult, while its possibility of being malignant does exist. In this review, we make a comprehensive evaluation about diagnostic value of some risk factors of solitary pulmonary nodules, including age, nodule diameter, doubling time, nodule location, air bronchogram, ground-glass opacitie, vacuole, lobulation, spiculation, vascular convergence, pleural indentation, nodule calcification, past medical history, smoking history, past symptoms and nodule density. Future perspective of diagnostic strategies is also discussed.

  • Status and Risk Factors Analysis on 4L Lymphatic Metastasis in Lung Cancer

ObjectiveTo observe the outcome of left lung cancer underwent surgical treatment and to analysis the relative risk factors for 4L lymphatic metastasis. MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 643 lung cancer patients who had underwent mediastinal lymph node dissection intraoperatively in our hospital between January 2011 and December 2013. There were 430 males and 213 females with a mean age of 60.2±9.6 years(range 22 to 83 years), 260 patients had their 4L lymph node dissected, while other 383 patients did not. ResultsAmong 260 patients with 4L lymph node dissected, 44(16.9%) were found 4L lymph node metastasis pathologically. And the results indicated that station 5 lymph node metastasis(P=0.000, OR=12.108 with 95%CI 4.564 to 32.122), station 7 lymph node metastasis(P=0.000, OR=8.496 with 95%CI 2.594 to 27.827), station 8 lymph node metastasis(P=0.029, OR=24.915 with 95%CI 1.395 to 444.948), station 10 lymph node metastasis(P=0.014, OR=3.983, 95%CI 1.321 to 12.009) were independently associated with high risk for 4L lymph node metastasis. Conclusion4L lymphadenectomy should be performed for left invasive lung cancer regularly, especially for patients with hilar lymph node and other mediastinal lymph node metastasis.

  • Research Progress of MicroRNA in serum in diagnosis and Prognosis of lung cancer

Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. The outcome and management of lung cancer patients could be improved by early diagnosis and prognosis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been implicated in signaling pathways regulating a variety of biological processes and play important roles in the development of carcinoma. Moreover, miRNAs can exist in the circulation in a remarkably stable form. All of these suggest miRNAs as new potentially clinical biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of lung cancer. In this review, we aim to discuss diagnostic and prognostic value and potential clinical utility of miRNAs in serum.

  • Clinical and Pathological Characteristics of Lung Carcinoma in Young Adults

ObjectiveTo explore the clinical and pathological characteristics of lung carcinoma in young adults, and improve the early diagnosis and treatment. MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 129 patients with lung carcinoma aged from 18 to 35 years old who came to West China Hospital of Siduan University from January 1st 2008 to December 31st 2014.Also we collected 32 young adults with lung benign mass to make the comparison of the clinical and pathological characteristics with the patients. ResultsIn the 129 patients with lung carcinoma, there were 72 females and 57 males.Adenocarcinoma (88/129) was the most common type of pathology, while others included small cell carcinoma (18/129), squamous cell carcinoma (13/129), and other types of carcinoma (10/129).Among patients with lung carcinoma, 41(31.8%) complained of refractory dry cough and another 40(31.0%) presented coughing and expectoration.Twenty-nine patients (22.5%) were misdiagnosed in their first visits. In young adults with lung carcinoma, 55.8% were at the Ⅳ stage with metastasis at the first-time diagnosis.Comparing with patients with benign lung mass, patients with lung carcinoma presented significantly more dry cough (P=0.011), chest distress (P=0.007) and weight loss (P=0.007);while fever was found more patients with lung benign mass (P=0.040).The differences in cough, expectoration, and emptysis between the two groups were not significant (P > 0.05). ConclusionsLung carcinoma in young adults often has atypical clinical presentations. Therefore, it is more commonly misdiagnosed.
