  • Analysis of Health Examination Results in 1 089 Retirees

ObjectiveTo analyze the health examination results of hospital retirees, understand their health status and provide the evidence for health management. MethodsThe data were collected from our 1 089 hospital retirees (51-96 years old) who received health examination in West China Hospital of Sichuan University from January to December 2013, including 345 males and 744 females, with a mean age of 70 years. The data were analyzed by SPSS 16.0 software. ResultsHypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes were the three chronic diseases with the highest detectable rate, and the rate was respectively 49.49%, 44.90% and 31.04%. The detectable rate of hypertension was not significantly different between male and female. The rate of dyslipidemia in females was higher than that in males. The rate of diabetes in males was higher than that in females. The detectable rate of hypertension and diabetes increased with the increase of age. The detectable rate of dyslipidemia had no significant relationship with age. ConclusionThe health condition of retirees cannot be neglected. We need to strengthen the health management for the retirees.

  • Correlation between RUNX3 expression of Colorectal Cancer and Its Clinical Characteristics: A Meta-Analysis

ObjectiveTo systematically review the correlation between RUNX3 expression of colorectal cancer and its clinical characteristics. MethodsDatabases including PubMed, The Cochrane Library (Issue 9, 2013), EMbase, MEDLINE (Ovid), CNKI, VIP, WanFang Data and CBM were searched for collecting published international and domestic case-control studies on the correlation between RUNX3 expression of colorectal cancer and its clinical characteristics from the date of their establishment to October 1st, 2013. Two reviewers screened literature according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracted data, and assessed the methodological quality of the included studies. Then, meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.2 software. ResultsA total of 7 case-control studies were included involving 804 cases in total (521 cases in colorectal cancer group and 383 cases in control group). The results of meta-analysis showed that, RUNX3 expression was lower in the colorectal cancer group than in the normal control group (OR=0.05, 95%CI 0.03 to 0.08, P < 0.000 01); higher in the moderately/highly-differentiated group than in the poorly differentiated group (OR=4.77, 95%CI 2.88 to 7.90, P < 0.000 01); higher in colorectal cancer with invasion depth on T1-T2 stage than in that on T3-T4 stage (OR=8.13, 95%CI 4.15 to 15.92, P < 0.000 01); and lower in the colorectal cancer accompanied with lymph node metastasis than that without lymph node metastasis (OR=0.23, 95%CI 0.14 to 0.36, P < 0.000 01), all with significant differences. No significant difference was found in RUNX3 expression between groups by age, sex and tumour location. ConclusionRUNX3 expression is notably correlated to colorectal cancer and its clinical characteristics. Due to the quantity and quality limitation of the included studies, the above conclusion still needs to be further proved by performing more high quality studies.

  • A Comparative Study on the Teaching Effectiveness between Patient based Problem-based Learning and Conventional Bedside Teaching

ObjectiveTo evaluate the teaching effect of Patient based Problem-Based Learning (PPBL) vs. conventional bedside teaching (CBT) instudents of eight years medical program. MethodSix students of Eight years medical program in two grades from volunteer registration were randomized into PPBL group and the other students were recruited into CBT group. After one year study, the test score in module TBL test, written test in final exam and mutual score were evaluated to compare the teaching effect of two groups. ResultsThe baseline of the two groups were matched when comparing their grades in Diagnoses Course. After trainee period, there were no significant differences between two groups of the test score in module TBL test, written test in final exam and mutual score. ConclusionThe PPBL mode is not inferior to conventional bedside teaching. Furthermore, with advantage in developing the competency of communication, cooperation and manage the information, PPBL has its special value and should be popularized.
