  • Correction between Hyperlipoidemia and Prostate Cancer: A Clinical Study

    ObjectiveTo assess whether hyperlipoidemia affects the occurrence and progression of prostate cancer (PCA). MethodsA hospital based retrospective study was carried out in Zhangzhou Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University using data from a total of 112 cases of PCA, which underwent radical prostatectomy due to suspected PCA and confirmed by prostate biopsy pathology. ResultsOf the 112 PCA patients, 64 (57.14%) were PCA with hyperlipoidemia (PCA-H). Compared with PCA patients, the patients of PCA-H patients had younger onset age (65.0±5.0 vs. 67.8±3.7, P=0.001), increased prostate volume (75.0±11.7 mL vs. 54.5±8.5 mL, P < 0.001), increased level of TPSA (61.4±23.3 ng/mL vs. 33.4±14.9 ng/mL, P < 0.001), and Gleason grade (6.9±1.8 vs. 5.0±1.9, P < 0.001), later clinical stage (P < 0.001), shorter survival time (49.8±12.7 months vs. 57.3±6.2 months, P < 0.001) and decreased 5 years of survival rate (51.6% vs. 77.1%, P=0.006). The level of cholesterol, triglyceride and high density lipoprotein was significantly associated with the rejuvenation of onset age, the enlargement of prostate volume, increasing of serum TPSA, the progression of TNM clinical stage, increasing of Gleason grade, shorten of survival time and dropping of 5 years of survival rate (P < 0.05). In multiplefactor regression analysis, only hyperlipoidemia (OR=3.204, P=0.022) and Gleason grade (OR=8.611, P < 0.001) were the independent risk factors of prognosis. ConclusionThe situation of PCA with hyperlipoidemia is frequently noted in clinics, and hyperlipoidemia may be one of the risk factors in the processes of PCA growth and progression.

  • Incidence of Depression and Its Related Factors in Hypospadias Patients after Surgical Treatment

    ObjectivTo investigate the incidence of depression and its etiological factors in patients with hypospadias after operation. MethodsFrom January to June 2015, we investigated the incidence of depression symptoms among patients with hypospadias after surgical treatment from January 1990 to December 1994 in Zhangzhou Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University, and we matched them with mentally healthy adults of the same age to 1:1 ratio. Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale and Correlation Factor Questionnaire were used to investigate and analyze the related factors of depression symptoms between the patients with hypospadias and the healthy males. ResultsA total of 80 patients with hypospadias after surgical treatment and 80 healthy males as control were included. There were no significant differences in male secondary sexual development, testis development, serum testosterone levels and postoperative length and girth of the penis in two groups. The incidence rate of depression symptoms was 45.0% (16/80) in the hypospadias patients after operation, extremely significantly higher than 6.3% (5/80) in the control group (χ2=6.632, P=0.01). The result of multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that the main risk factors of depression symptoms were worries about dissatisfaction with penile and scrotal appearance (F=16.210 3, P=0.001), sexual satisfaction (F=4.621 2, P=0.036) and sexual function (F=4.103 2, P=0.043). ConclusionSymptoms of depression often occur in hypospadias patients after operation, and the major etiological factors are dissatisfaction with penile and scrotal appearance, sexual satisfaction and sexual function.

  • Efficacy and Safety of Coenzyme Q10 for Idiopathic Oligoasthenoteratozoospermia: A Meta-analysis

    ObjectiveTo systematically review the efficacy and safety of CoQ10 for idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (iOAT). MethodsWe searched databases including PubMed, EMbase, MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, CBM, CNKI, VIP and WanFang Data from inception to May 31th 2016 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on CoQ10 in the treatment of iOAT. Two reviewers independently screened literature, extracted data and assessed the risk of bias of included studies. Then, meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software. ResultsSeven RCTs involving 803 patients were included. The results of meta-analysis showed, compared with the control group, the CoQ10 group could significantly increase sperm concentration (MD=3.37, 95%CI 0.68 to 6.05, P=0.01), the number of A grade spermatozoa (MD=5.06, 95%CI 3.84 to 6.28, P < 0.000 01), the number of A+B grade spermatozoa (MD=7.72, 95%CI 4.19 to 11.26, P < 0.000 1), the rate of morphologically normal sperm (MD=1.89, 95%CI 0.63 to 3.16, P=0.003) and sperm coenzyme Q10 level (MD=40.02, 95%CI 24.73 to 55.31, P < 0.000 01), while not improve the levels of serum sex hormone (FSH: MD=–3.48, 95%CI –5.17 to –1.79, P < 0.000 1; LH: MD=–3.23, 95%CI –7.55 to 1.08, P=0.14; T: MD=0.45, 95%CI –3.31 to 4.20, P=0.82). No significant difference in adverse event was noted between two groups. ConclusionThe evidence suggests that CoQ10 as empiric medical therapy for iOAT with low non-serious adverse event associated, may improve sperm concentration and percent sperm motility. However, the strength of evidence is low due to high risk of bias of the included studies. More rigorous studies are needed to verify the above conclusion.
